He is my all time favorite composer, even though he is not on the list. For twelve years Tchaikovsky held the position, and even wrote a book on harmony to prove he was a true professor of music. Tchaikovsky was opposed to the aims of the Russian nationalist composers and used Western European forms and idioms, although his work instinctively reflects the Russian temperament. Aaron Copland was not raised in a musical family; in fact they discouraged him from pursuing a career in music. Back to Index AUGUST WILHELMJ (b.1845-d London 1908) He entered David's class in 1861, having been recommended by Liszt. He was free to quit the conservatory, and he began a series of travels and stays abroad. The King gave the Tuileries Palace and the Orchestra became the best in Europe. His music was unconventional and novel for the time because he used his compositions to enhance the moods of the films and used Richard Wagner’s concept of leitmotifs to further develop and illustrate characters.

In response to the NASA scientist in saying he would send BACH to space for Aliens to here, I can say I cannot disagree more. However, composers from other countries began to feel they should break away. Valse, Act I - Sleeping Beauty, Ballet Suite, Op.66 13. Rubinstein later got over this rededication, and even made that individual piece part of his own program. His tone poem The Swan of Tuonela is the second part of his Opus 22, Lemminkäinen (Four legends), which was based on the Kalevala epic from Finnish mythology.
